Teaching and Advising

I have taught a variety of undergraduate courses across policing, corrections, and justice policy, both in-person and online.

Teaching Philosophy

My Teaching Philosophy

I approach teaching with a blended philosophy that integrates the structure of traditional pedagogy with the creativity of student-centered innovation. I value clear, scaffolded instruction, rigorous assessment, and deep textual engagement to build critical thinking skills. At the same time, I incorporate collaborative learning, peer-led dialogue, and experiential assignments that connect course content to real-world justice issues.

For instance, in my corrections and policy-focused classes, students may be encouraged to participate in simulated parole hearings, reflection-based writing, and current event analyses that push them to consider how race, gender, and mental health intersect within carceral systems. These applied activities foster engagement while deepening students’ understanding of structural inequality.

Secondly, I view feedback as a developmental tool, not just an evaluative one. I prioritize transparency and responsiveness in grading, using rubrics and individual comments to encourage revision and support student growth.

My teaching is deeply informed by my research on incarceration, reentry, and racial disparities. I regularly draw on my own empirical work and policy analysis to enrich class discussion and bridge the gap between scholarship and practice.

Above all, I aim to create inclusive, rigorous classrooms where students are empowered to learn, question, and lead.
